What are the requirements to become META Certified?
- Submission of a completed Application.
- Personal experience in recovery (as defined by each individual).
- Successful completion of a peer specialist training program.
- If the peer specialist training program that you attended was not through the Recovery Opportunity Center, LLC (or formerly through META Services, Inc.), documentation of completion and content will be evaluated to ensure all recovery and peer support principles and competencies were adequately covered.
- Have the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the recovery principles through competency testing.
- Verifiable human services work experience of a minimum of three months (full time or the equivalent to 500 hours part time) during the past three years in a paid employment or volunteer setting.
- Provide at least two (2) references completed on META Certification Reference forms. One reference must be from a supervisor who has knowledge of your peer support work. One reference can be from a family member, friend or supporter.
- Signed Agreement to practice peer support in alignment with the META Certification Code of Values and Ethics.
- Upon the submission of all the required documents and information, your application packet will be processed and reviewed. If there are any noted deficiencies, you will be contacted and informed of the item(s) missing. A completed application packet will be evaluated within two weeks from the date it is received.
How long is a META Certification valid?
- A META Certification is valid for two years from the date of initial approval. Individuals that are META Certified receive a certificate and a certification card that identifies the expiration date. Approximately 120 days prior to the expiration of certification, META Certification, Inc. will send out a packet containing all of the required documents for the renewal process.

- Initial certification fee is $75.00.
- Renewal certification fee is $50.00
- Upon review of an initial certification application packet, if a certification will not be issued – half of the application-processing fee will be refunded.
What if I move during the year?
- Your META Certification is valid – no matter where you reside. It is important that you provide META Certification, Inc. with an update whenever you move – whether it is down the street or across the country. META Certification, Inc. will update their database and ensure that you continue to receive all of the benefits offered through your META Certification.
